- Create awareness regarding the child's needs, this is, that a child cannot be treated as a small adult. It is necessary to treat children according to different age groups because in each one of them the child has reached different levels of maturity.
- Understand that children are not small adults, and that the treatments they are being subjected to must vary according to their maturational state.
Until quite recently, when a child had to be medicated he was treated as a young adult, by giving him doses proportional to his age, regardless of his stage of development.
Also, children, as a part of the population, were considered too vulnerable to be subjected to any type of clinical trial, which paradoxically has caused that the vast majority of drugs for children have never been tested in children.
